Site Design Resources

Every Web site is a publication, and readers approach publications with two fundamental needs:
to find specific information, and to be given an opinion, to be informed on what's important.
That's the job of content.
Everyone agrees site design and content are central to the success of a Web site.
It is also important to understand, that putting up a "useful" website or a site that others will
want to visit, requires a commitment of those responsible for it, to keep it updated and useful.

Designing Usable Sites
Design Principles of Websites

Read up on these basic design principles to help
you build the most effective and broad-reaching
website possible. The central philosophy?
Take into consideration the widest range
of your user capabilities - whether physical or mental.

like to attack. Make sure you keep your computer updated

Once you become familiar with HTML
and Comfortable writing it -
You can download some of the
FREE HTML editors available - You actually don't need Fancy Software or

Wonderful websites can be created by using

Check out my Graphics Resources for
Complete Webpage "GraphicSets" to use for Websites.

Useful sites & articles, for designing websites that can be viewed
and used by "most everyone" visiting your site.

Once you have created a page:
To understand and see how your visitors will View your pages -
Please - VIEW Your Completed Pages in Different Browsers,
(Internet Explorer, Netscape -old and newer versions)
different monitors - your friends systems, from your workplace systems
And make note of load time and check that Tables & Frames
Look the way you intended.
Just because it looks good on your machine
Doesn't mean all visitors from all systems/browserswill view it the same way!!!

And using "fancy and or unusual" FONTS Can often cause problems
Unless the viewer - looking at your pages has the Same FONT installed
on their Computer they "Will Not" See it!  As you had intended.
They will view the page seeing a standard Default Font.
To play it safe Use a Standard FONT such as Arial, Helvetica
or Times New Roman for this page I am using Arial with a font size of -1.

and also note that you can create "graphics" with any font you choose if you really
want to jazz up your pages with unusual fonts. Graphics created with tools such as I use
XaraWebstyle can be optimized for quick loading.

Domain Names & Hosting

Once you've learned how to create basic web pages you'll want a place
to Post them to the Internet
There are several spots that will HOST you for FREE
FREE Space - most often comes with Advertising, Banner Ads, etc.
These 2 particular sites below come with NO BANNER ADS!!
You buy a DOMAIN NAME and they will HOST YOUR SITE FOR FREE!!
These are great for sites that are "personal" or low traffic sites.
DO NOT USE these FREE hosting/No ADs options if you have a business site
or expect alot of traffic. - Although each site offers "pay for" hosting options
that you can upgrade to.

Catalog.com
For just $35 a year, you get a domain name and high-quality, free web hosting including:

• 50 MB of storage
• 3 GB of transfer
• 5 POP3 Email Account
• MySQL
• Free WebMail
• 24x7 Ticket Support
• Free Web Site Builder
• CGI-BIN
• PHP enabled
• Server Side Includes
• FrontPage Extensions
• Web Statistics
• Free Search Engine Tools

And see Doteasy.com
Take a look at their FREE hosting service options.
doteasy.com hosts for FREE my local Western NY Library Assistants site
wnyla.org

I use a FREE FTP program to upload/download all my webpages
You can download a FREE Easy to use Simple program too:
Try either of these FTP free software programs
FTP Explorer or FTP Commander

The lure of having your own.."website address" can be mighty tempting
Obtaining a domain name is easy..the cost of a domain name can
range from $10 to $35 per year - and
that COST  Covers
the "REGISTRATION FEE"  Only!!!
Your domain will be registered with Internic.

A Guide to Domain Name Registration
**NOTE: this site also offers registration sevices, etc. through a partner **

Having a Domain name registered
Does NOT mean YOU have A WEBSITE!
Find out more about Domain Names,
Check to see if  What you would like to have is available:
NetWork Solutions  - http://www.networksolutions.com

To put your DOMAIN Name up in Web Lights:
You will need to FIND A PLACE to  "HOST" your website.
Costs and Service Plans - vary across the Net.
Low Cost sites offer Considerable Value!
Examine the program, read the fine print, e-mail the Host provider,
see what kind of response you get, test their knowledge,
See if their support team would be able to accomodate your needs.
Most programs offer much more than a Beginner needs,
and unless you plan on putting up an Extensive site, that will
be updated often with content, etc. - You are probably
best off with a FREE website either from your own ISP,
or a Free site (Such as Yahoo/Geocities,) from an Online Provider

Check with your own Internet Provider and ask if they can
Host your "namehere domain".com

PLEASE NOTE: on many FREE sites you are only alloted a small amount
of Bandwidth or traffic allowance. And even pay for hosting services
have bandwidth allotments -
Here are excerpts quoted from online websites that will help you
understand about bandwidth:

What is bandwidth?
When you buy a web hosting plan, generally you have limited bandwith
available for your website. Bandwidth is the amount of data transferred
when your website is accessed. e.g. if you home page size is 10K ( k - kilobytes )
and it has an image of size 50k, then when your website home page is display,
a total of 10k+50k=60k bandwidth is used.
Some hostings provide unlimited bandwidth usage.
The more the better.
If your website has lot of traffic, then you can easily uses bandwidth in GigaBytes.

More definitions  - What is bandwidth?

A measurement of the amount of data that can be transmitted over a network at any given time.
The higher the network's bandwidth, the greater the volume of data that can be transmitted.
www.oit.ohio-state.edu/glossary/

The rate at which you can send or receive information through your connection to the Internet.
The range of transmission frequencies a network can use.
The greater the bandwidth the more information that can be transferred
over that network at one time. The term bandwidth also broadly includes throughput,
meaning the amount of data sent

and sites like Doteasy - let you buy your own domain name,
they register it, and then give you 20meg of space with NO banner ads!!
For FREE! - you can add frills for a price but most folks can get by
    without "cgi bins" etc.
Search for other FREE WebSites from
    http://www.thefreesite.com/Free_Web_Space/
More on FREE Hosting etc.:
FREE Hosting Sites
Check this Free Hosting Listing.

Remember - You DO NOT NEED - to purchase a Domain name to have a Website-
Some sites such as Yahoo/Geocities let you pick a user name and you can
create a site, easily online for FREE, (your site will have ads).
And be sure to check with your own Internet Service Provider, they
may offer a free website and webpage building tools.
I personally use the services Verizon DSL and they offer 5meg of free space
and SiteBuilder tools to create a personal website.

But Purchasing "younameit.com" is a easy  way to have friends & family find you -
and if you want an e-business site, or a group or "organization" site -
it will help establish "Your On Line Identity"

Download the sets in their "zip" format, to keep all java script
    and graphics layouts intact.

your website creations to the "same folder" or spot in your computer
files (floppy disc, or hard drive)

I use a variety of software products to create graphics for my websites
Microsoft Picture It Photo 2002, Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10, Adobe Photoshop Elements
and the one used most for LibrarySupportStaff.com's graphic headings and buttons - etc.
is Xara Webstyle 4.0 - which has complete Website Templates as well.

And don't forget that most wordprocessing, or
slide presentation programs (like power point) also allow you to save your
creations, as HTML web pages.  Just remember to upload
all graphics/photos, images, that are associated with your documents, or slides to your website server.
If you don't upload each image you have on your web page, your visitors will not see them.

If you just want to share photos with family and friends, but don't want
