Good or Bad Bosses Make Good or Bad Employees
Tom Culley - Small Business Columnist
Excerpt quoted from online article:
http://www.tailwind.com/db/k.asp?hid=90&aid=2973
-- People still work in exchange for only one
commodity: money. That's still what makes the world go
round. Pay employees less than they think they deserve
or can get elsewhere; they will work grudgingly and
the good ones will jump ship. Pay them better than
their outside options; they will work willingly and
the good ones will hang around. Even the hottest
incentive, employee stock options, are simply a
dangling carrot of future money.
-- People still care more about their personal lives,
homes and families than about their employers'
priorities--and always will. If employers make honest,
sensible efforts to ease the natural conflicts between
work life and personal life, employees (at least the
smart ones) will appreciate it. Show by indifference
that you don't give a damn, and they won't either.
-- People are still people. Treat them badly in their
jobs and they will treat their jobs badly. Treat them
fairly and the good ones will reciprocate. Yes, of
course, bad dudes will still be bad dudes; you can't
change the rotten ones with sweetness and seminars.
Firing them will solve your problem; you operate a
business, not a personality transformation ward.

Ten Things That Bad Managers Do
by Cyndi Maxey, CSP
http://www.cyndimaxey.com/articles/tenbad.htm

"People cannot be managed. Inventories can be managed but people must be led."
Ross Perot, founder, EDS Corporation
Excerpt quoted from article online:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/business/features/bosses/badmanager.shtml
Bad managers make a habit of blaming others for their
mistakes. Just as good managers are happy to share
credit, bad managers are eager to pinpoint blame
either by scapegoating a colleague or by
disassociating themselves from a poor decision or
outcome.
Many bad managers have problems being honest with
colleagues and customers, papering over inadequacies
with broken promises about how things will improve.
This trait is often the consequence of poor management
training because people have not been encouraged to
acquire or learn the necessary skills to lead and
inspire others.
Instead of thinking of the greater good of the
business and how colleagues can be encouraged to help
achieve this, bad managers can focus obsessively on
one small measure of success to the exclusion of all
others.

Stress in the library

Stress is an issue of major concern to employers and employees today. It can affect relationships in the workplace – and in the home. Causes can include balancing roles as a parent and in a career, a continuing process of change exacerbated by the rapid developments in information technology including e-mail and the mobile phone, a reducing security about employment – and, perhaps, the frustrations of using customer care services … The list can be long, and different individuals have their own triggers for stress, and react in different ways.

 From The Critics
Publisher's Weekly
So many offices have a boss who seems to find pleasure in humiliating workers or a manipulating employee who sabotages coworkers behind their backs. These kinds of people come in many disguises (there's the business psychopath, the perfectionist, etc.) and can make working difficult and frustrating. Psychology writer David L. Wiener has penned Power Freaks: Dealing with Them in the Workplace or Anyplace, an analysis of why people act this way, how to recognize them and how to develop a strategy for getting along with them. He also includes a quiz to help readers assess their own instinctual drive for power. (Sept.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
