Taming the Wireless Frontier: PDAs, Tablets, and Laptops at Home on the Range
by Joe Williams • education services librarian at Medical Sciences Library
This Texas-based education services librarian likens designing wireless programs to settling a new frontier.
Once his associates got the lay of the land and made some important decisions about responsibility and security, they started to make downright good use of all the new-fangled technology. Now they're loaning laptops and PDAs, and they have reference librarians roving the range, wire-free.

Related information about GRANTS available from PALM.com
Quoted from site:
The Palm Education Pioneer (PEP) Grant Program gives Palm™ handhelds to K-12 teachers and their students so that they can explore new ways to teach and learn.
Palm is teaming with SRI International's Center for Technology in Learning (CTL). CTL is administering the program as well evaluating the uses, experiences, and effectiveness of Palm handhelds in K-12 teaching and learning. The research results will add to the knowledge of "best practices" for the entire learning community. Palm announced the first round of PEP awards at the Florida Education Technology Conference (FETC) in January 2001 and the second round of PEP awards at the National Education Technology Conference (NECC) in June, 2001. The awardees from across the United States represent projects in a variety of grade levels and academic programs.

PDAs: Exploring the Role of the Medical Librarian
Abstract:
Handheld computers, particularly personal digital assistants (PDAs), are being used in ever increasing numbers by health care providers. Medical librarians have responded to this technology by providing library services to PDA users in the form of Web-based resource pages, training sessions, user groups, library channels, electronic reference resources, hardware support, and software recommendations.

Free Quality PDA Software for Physicians
Volume: 1 Issue: 1 Pgs: 69 - 88   2003/ 2004
Abstract:
As PDAs are becoming practical tools for health care professionals, medical librarians are frequently asked to give recommendations of PDA software. Based on recommendations from medical librarians, physicians, and medical students, an annotated list of free PDA software has been compiled to meet the needs of medical librarians. The list includes software for Palm OS and Pocket PC and is divided into sections based on the software's function.

Libraries & Technology
Excerpt quoted from website
This page has references to a variety of sites related, in some manner, to library technology. While covering many aspects of the subject, there is somewhat more emphasis on technology use and issues in public libraries.  Sites in the Networking section are more broadly inclusive to include intellectual freedom issues, especially in how IF relates to technology. Sites referenced on this page do not imply any type of endorsement.
