Title
Why your library needs a .org, .com, and .net!
Source
Computers in Libraries, 21(8):34-8, 2001 Sep. (7 ref)
Abbreviated Source
COMPUT LIBR. 21(8):34-8, 2001 Sep. (7 ref)
Abstract
Many information seekers think there's something great about going to a .com.
If you can't convince them that there's good information at your .edu,
then add new dimensions to your own domain names.
This university bought more domain names and used URL
masking so that people who clicked on the new addresses
were sent into the library's existing Web pages.
Their experiences with this interesting twist were pretty successful! (7 ref)

Title
Developing information literacy: a key to evidence-based nursing.
Source
International Nursing Review, 48(2):86-92, 2001 Jun. (12 ref)
Abstract
This report describes the evaluation of a curriculum-integrated programme
designed to help students develop an awareness of the nursing literature,
the skills to locate and retrieve it, and skills required in its evaluation;
in other words 'information literacy'. Positive changes in student performance
on objective measures of information-literacy skills were revealed as
well as a significant increase in the levels of confidence of the student
in performing those skills. Students who had undertaken the information-literacy
('programme' students) performed better on a range of objective measures of information literacy,
as well as reporting higher levels of confidence in these skills, than students who had not participated in the programme ('non-programme' students). Evaluation of this programme provides evidence
of the potential usefulness of a curriculum-integrated approach for the development
of information-literacy skills within nursing education.
With these underlying skills, students will be better equipped
to consolidate and extend their key information-literacy skills to
include research appreciation and application.
These are vital for effective lifelong learning and a prerequisite to evidence-based practice. (12 ref)

How the OCLC CORC service is helping weave libraries into the Web.
Source
Online Information Review, 25(1):41-6, 2001. (1 ref)
Abstract
Powerful results can be achieved when librarians combine their knowledge
access skills with the OCLC (Online Computer Library Centre)
CORC (Cooperative Online Resource Catalogue) service.
As a state-of-the-art Web-based metadata creation system,
CORC is optimised for creating bibliographic records and
pathfinders (subject bibliographies) for electronic resources.
CORC has evolved from an idea in OCLC's Office of Research
through system development, to a core OCLC product offering in
less than two years. As CORC use steadily increases worldwide
librarians continually find innovative ways to incorporate the service
into their library workflow. Details about the OCLC CORC service,
and examples of how three libraries are using CORC, are given.
This is just the beginning for this cornerstone of OCLC's strategic plan. (1 ref)
