Many things are happening in both libraries and coffee houses.
Both are changing and adapting to new environments and new consumers and users.
Change is necessary for survival and relevance to society.

      Food for thought
Campus libraries add cafes and meeting spaces to lure

      Pinch that penny!
      Mon, 10 Feb 2003
Kevin doesn't understand why libraries are installing coffee bars instead of more books. He argues that the reason he doesn't use the library much is that it has very few books that he's interested in. I see his point, but I also see the reasoning behind coffee bars and other weird installations.

Starbucks and Library Brew Up Partnership
The two main staples of the Pacific Northwest, with its overabundance of cool, rainy days, are strong, hot coffee and good, thick books. It's here that a strong alliance was born between a busy public library in Portland, Oregon and the ubiquitous Starbucks Coffee chain, based in neighboring Seattle; a private/public sector partnership that benefits both a corporation and the community.

We work with colleges and universities to create unique, city-like cafes right on campus. Our goal is to provide students with a better quality of life—a meeting place that’s not a bar and not a library. A place to study, read, debate, listen to music, and meet new people.
A place to call their own
