Cataloging electronic journals: learning to weave the Web.
Source
Internet Reference Services Quarterly. 3(3):29-43, 1998. (7 ref)
Abstract
Once the decision was made to catalog electronic serials
(electronic journals or e-journals) at the
University of Pennsylvania, it was up to the serials catalogers
to decide how much information would
be provided in the record, as well as to
develop a "standard" form.
Even though the cataloging would come
from two separate units
(the main University Library and the Biomedical Library),
the records would be part of the same OPAC.
As very few other libraries were cataloging
Internet resources at the time and national standards
were still under discussion,
it was necessary to "learn by doing".
The authors describe the process of creating
cataloging records for the more than 1550
Internet serial resources and the progression
from brief, basic records on the library's gopher
to full-level cataloging of Internet titles for these items.
Examples of problems unique to this format are supplied;
discussion of foreign and domestic online
newspapers and established publisher-and/
or vendor-generated scholarly journals are included. (7 ref)

Abstract
This article traces the background and development of CatSkill,
the computer assisted learning (CAL) CD-ROM
which provides a complete course on AACR2 1988 rev,
and four MARC coding schemes -
ABN MARC, CAN/MARC, UK MARC and USMARC.
This product was developed through a partnership of
two Australian companies, DocMatrix Pty Ltd
and Learning Curve Pty Ltd. The potential of CatSkill
for paraprofessional and professional library training
in library schools and for in-house training is discussed.
The future of CAL for both library technical training
and for educating users to utilise library resources
effectively is outlined. (11 bib)

Beyond bookmarks: a review of frameworks, features, and functionalities of
schemes for organizing the Web.
Source
Internet Reference Services Quarterly. 3(1):69-82, 1998. (6 ref)
Abstract
In an effort to facilitate use of the Internet,
a number of libraries have begun to apply established
professional organizational practices and approaches to
the management of World Wide Web resources.
This paper reviews and analyzes the various frameworks,
features, and functionalities of selected sites that have
adapted or adopted standard library classification schemes
or controlled vocabularies to enhance access to WWW
information sources. The common elements of many sites
and the structural and navigational approaches incorporated
with select sites are profiled.
An Appendix of known sites that make use
of standard classification schemes or controlled
vocabularies to organize Web resources is included. (6 ref)

CD-MARC bibliographic databases as an alternative to other information
sources: cataloguers' evaluation of the use of LC CD-MARC at Kenneth Dike
Library, University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
Source
Electronic Library. 14(3):215-20, 1996 Jun. (5 ref)
Abstract
The Library of Congress (LC compact disc machine-readable catalogue
(CD-MARC) was recently acquired by the Kenneth Dike Library,
University of Ibadan. Its use by the cataloguing librarians was
evaluated in terms of efficiency (effect on cataloguing time)
and effectiveness (effect on monthly output) when compared with using
other information sources such as microfiches,
cataloguing-in-publication (CIP) data and
printed sources--LC subject headings,
LC National Union Catalogue, LC monographic series, etc.
The positive influence of the new technology was evident
as there were reductions in cataloguing time
and increases in monthly output of items catalogued. (5 ref)
