LIBRARY MOSAICS/COLT ANNUAL AWARDS
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Nominations Deadline: January 20 of each year

Library Mosaics/COLT Annual Awards

Greetings from the staff of Library Mosaics:

Library Mosaics, in conjunction with the Council on Library/Media
Technicians (COLT), sponsors two awards which are presented at the annual
COLT Conference. The awards are presented to the Outstanding Support Staff
and the Outstanding Supporter of Support Staff.

The following criteria have been established for these awards. Applicants
must demonstrate significant contributions or accomplishments in at least
   tow of the following areas:

   1. Local library and/or organization (example: innovative project or
   activity for their individual library or support staff organization;
encouraging staff to participate in activities

   2. Statewide/Regional organization (example: coordinator of a regional
staff conference; assisting staff in the organization of a support staff
   program)

   3. National organization (example: officer of LSSIRT, COLT; or coordinator
   of a national workshop/program)

   4. Innovative Project or Activity: (example: creator of a specialized
database or service which can be used by support staff)

It should be noted that all projects and activities should directly
involve, or be focused on, support staff working in libraries or
information centers. Submissions and/or nominations should clearly state
the level of participation of the nominee. Nominees will be rated
according to their level of participation. For example, organizers and
coordinators will be rated higher than a workshop or conference
   participant.

Projects and activities will be judged according to the degree by which
the status and work of support staff has improved or has been enhanced
   within the library profession.

Nominations are solicited from the entire library profession. Nominations
should include the name of the candidate, his/her position and title, and
a description (no more than 500 words) of their qualifications for these
   awards.

An awards committee consisting of officers of COLT, and the editor and
publisher of Library Mosaics will review nomination and will make
selections based on the above listed criteria.

Send nominations by January 20, 2005 to: Awards Committee, Library
Mosaics, P.O. Box 5171, Culver City, CA 90231.

The only way the people who make a difference can be
recognized is if *you* nominate them. Do it now!

Annually Library Mosaics and the Council on Library/Media Technicians
(COLT) present awards for "Outstanding Support Staff" and
"Outstanding Supporter of Support Staff."
These awards are given to individuals who have
been outstanding in their service to library support staff. Recipients are
recognized at the annual COLT Conference. Each is presented with a $100
prize and a plaque noting their special achievement. They are also the
focus of a cover and feature article in Library Mosaics. The deadline for
nominations is January 20, of each year.

*Supporter* of Support Staff annual award
Who has helped you be your best?

Many of us who are active in library support activities receive positive
support from our library directors or department heads.  That support
ranges from money to attend conferences, time to write articles or positive
comments about what we do.  One library administrator encouraged her staff
to present a conference program and provided a supportive environment for
the staff to participate in professional activities.  She was thanked by
the staff when they recommended her for the 1995 Library Mosaics COLT
award. In 1996 Dr. Willie Hardin's support of the Arkansas Library
Paraprofessional Association networking and continuing education programs
resulted in his receipt of the award.  Since then five additional persons
have been recognized.

Who has helped you by providing a positive environment or
concrete  assistance as you pursue you library professional
activities?  Why not submit that librarian or library administrator for the
Library Mosaics COLT Supporter of Support Staff Award.  It is not hard to
do.  Just send a few paragraphs to Library Mosaics describing why the
person is deserving of the award and give information about how to contact
that person and yourself.

Do it now.  The deadline for nominations is January 20, of each year

Library Journal's Annual Awards

Is there a paraprofessional who is key to the success of your
library? Paraprofessionals, now the largest constituency of
library workers, are the backbone of libraries. In recognition
of their many contributions to library service, Library Journal
will honor one support staffer with its fifth annual
Paraprofessional of the Year award in its March 1 issue.
The deadline for nominations is January 7, 2005.

The Paraprofesssional of the Year award recognizes the essential
role of paraprofessionals in providing excellent library service
and places special emphasis on the efforts of the winner to
further the role of paraprofessionals in the library
profession. The editors consider this award as equal in
importance to LJ's annual Librarian of the Year Award, which
debuted in 1989 and recognizes those who hold the MLS.

2005 Library Journal Paraprofessional of the Year Award.

Paraprofessional of the Year Award Nominations

Library Journal will honor one support staffer with its fifth annual
Paraprofessional of the Year award in its March 1, 2005, issue.
Sponsored by Brodart Library Supplies & Furnishings, which underwrites
the $1500 cash prize and a reception to honor the winner at the American
Library Association conference in June, the award recognizes the
essential role of paraprofessionals, now the largest constituency of
library workers, in providing excellent library service. It places
special emphasis on the efforts of the winner to further the role of
paraprofessionals in the library profession. The winner will be profiled
in the March 1 issue of LJ.

Nominating criteria

The criteria for LJ's Paraprofessional of the Year are excellence in
performing their job, including contribution(s) enabling the library to
best serve its constituents and/or its community (whether town,
college/university, school, or corporation), the encouragement of
reading and the use of the library's resources, a commitment to free
access to information for all, and the candidate's work to build
networks, organizations, and/or groups to back excellence in library
work and new career paths for support staff, and improved communication
and the breaking down of barriers between support staff and the MLS
librarians with whom they work.

Nominating letters should name the candidate and describe in 500 words or less why the nominee deserves the award. Supporting letters and accompanying material will be considered, but the nominating letter itself will be of prime importance.

May I Have The Giraffe Please?
A Brief Exploration of 1998 Library Awards.

Figuring out who gets to "pick" nominee's
and deciding what qualifys for nomination, can be difficult,
but the process should be fair and honest.
When employees trust the process of an award system,
they feel they can trust the "award winners" as really
being picked by a fair & honest system of judgement.

Make sure that those who Nominate
Includes "everyone" who works in the  Libraries
of  your organization.
Not everyone can attend Conferences,
Not everyone can be a Speaker and
Go out and "talk up" the libraries
Not everyone is as "valued" by their Administrators
as they would like to be.
But some employees, do
Extraordinary jobs and are mentors, role models
To their fellow staff, but may never receive the attention
Or "allocades" of their Superiors/ and-or/Directors because they are not
seen or known by these people.
And it might be those people, who may be in a position
to"judge" or "nominate"  for a particular award.
Remember small regular contributions or everyday ordinary
things an employee does on a regular basis, may actually
provide "big contributions" to the workflow of the Library.

If a Library chooses to "create" their own awards system,
they can be creative & fun with the whole idea of
rewarding employees, for any number of reasons.
Not every award has to be the same as the way "other Libraries"
do it or how National Organizations offer awards.
And libraries can also be "creative" with what the actual award
will be or given.
And most times it is best to have "one" annual awards function,
where everyone is invited. If you choose to have "frequent"
awards - given out during the year, keep the celebrations
brief.
Some Libraries do have
separate functions for awards to Student employees, and/or Volunteers.

Sometimes employees are not even aware that awards,
have deadlines, for nominations or applications.
And they may not be aware of what awards are currently
being "awarded" to Library employees.
Do as much as you can to Educate, and
Inform all employees of the Libraries
About the Awards and Honors that are either
Local inhouse awards, or Community or even
State and National awards.
- so that
Everyone has the time and opportunity
To nominate a candidate.
Inform them via Print Flyers, E-Mail,
Websites,  discussion groups
etc.

Remember to consider all Library Employees,
That are not classified as "Librarians"
Example:
From  Glossary for ASCLA important issues
http://www.ala.org/ascla/bph_standards.html
Definition of " Other"  (paraprofessional catergories)
Other professional/paraprofessional.
Positions that do not require a library degree,
but may require appropriate degrees or certification in another field.
Responsibilities do not include reader advisory service.
Position responsibilities and qualifications are greater than
 those for technical/support staff.
Examples may include but are not limited to system manager,
 studio manager, volunteer coordinator,
 production specialist
 or manager, outreach coordinator

The websites listed here, address their own agendas and ideas for
Awards and honors.
They give you some basics for "forming" a
Written proposal for a "framework" of an award criteria
 & nomination for the award.

The basis for any award or honor is to encourage
Participation in a staff person's  own library, organizations,
And their community.

You want the Awards to mean something and
You'll want all Staff to have an equal chance
For nomination and have the ability to
Be considered.

This note was posted on Libsup-L November 2004
from Doug Morrison - and is quoted below:

"The LIBSUP-L Recognition of Accomplishment Award",
it will recognize a member of the Library support staff family and will be given in honor of
someone who is a member of the list.
Membership to the list is defined as being able to send or receive emails from
LIBSUP-L -
**Find info on joining the list at
http://mailman.u.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/libsup-l

Many of you may remember and had participated in the old Libsup-L Poster of
the Year awards that ended somewhere around 2001 or so that was related to selecting
the best among us who had provided the list-members with the best post or
information through the listserv as a communication tool for the benefit of all of us.

The idea of re-starting the award had been in the back of my mind for some
time and I had discussed it with some of my colleagues.  One of the items under
consideration was that the time for this particular type of award has past - in it's own way it
was a celebration of thought and idea, but it was also a recognition of a certain type of
inactivity.

I went back to the drawing board and re-read some old libsup-l post that I
have archived here.
A statement made by Martha Parsons in an earlier post this year.  LSSIRT,
COLT, and many regional library support staff organizations are actively working towards
betterment of the working conditions and environment under which the paraprofessionals of
today as well as tomorrow will labor under.  There are also a variety of awards and means of
recognizing the activities of these people.  However, there is both a uniqueness and a
level of recognition and penetration into the work lives of library support staff around this
nation and other countries that other venues and groups just do not have readily available and the
means for near instantaneous feedback that LIBSUP-L provides.

As a result of this and in recognition of the fact that the earlier award
needed some updating and revamping and that conditions have changed in many ways since that earlier time.  I am announcing and proposing a new award uniquely based and tied to the
LIBSUP-L as it's venuefor nomination and process consideration.

The new award will be called "The LIBSUP-L Recognition of Accomplishment
Award", it will recognize a member of the Library support staff family and will be given in honor of
someone who is a member of the list.  Membership to the list is defined as being able to
send or receive emails from LIBSUP-L

The award will be given to a nominee that has been actively working on
behalf of the library support staff segment of the larger library community, whether this activity has
been on a national, regional, or state/institutional setting and has carried out these activities in one
of the following ways:

by publication of articles or other writings
by participation in a library support staff related organization on any level
by being active in changes regarding library support staff positions in
their library institution
by participating in continuing education or professional development activities
by pursuing course-work that would lead to a degree or certification
by being an example and encouraging others to serve or continue to improve
themselves
by other demonstrated means of improvement....

Self nominated individuals will not be considered, anyone at any level
within the greater library
community that meets the earlier stated criteria in this message will be
considered.
Nominations are to be sent to this email address:  morrison.244@osu.edu
Nominations should contain the following information:

- The name of the nominee
- The position and library institution of the nominee
- A description of what activities qualify the nominee to be eligible for
this award
- The activities for which the person is being nominated must have taken
place during
   the present year (2004).

All nominations are to be sent to the above email address no later than
December 9th 2004.
Nominations should be submitted in the body of the email message nominating
them and not submitted as an attachment file.

Nominations received after the above date will not be considered.  All
nominations received by that date will be processed and distributed between the Judging panel.  The
Judging Panel consists of 2 Award Judges who will select the top three nominations by a
blind review process and will then forward these selections back to me for final
consideration.  The Award Judges will finish their work by December 16th 2004 and the winner
will be announced via the LIBSUP-L list on December 17th 2004.

What will the award recipient receive?

- The congratulations and salutations of their peers.
- An electronic awards form/certificate suitable for printing from their
computer printer.
- And finally, I have lined up an Anonymous Contributor who will allow me
to take a book order
from the winner for up to $20.00.  The book(s) of the winners choice
would be purchased and
then shipped to an address the winner will provide and hopefully in time
for the holidays!  :-)

This undertaking is supported by no institution, organization, or
individuals other than myself, the award judges, and the anonymous contributor.  We are also grateful for the support and permission of Listmom Mary!!!  :-)

Questions, Comments, and Nominations are to be directed to me here at this
email address. email - morrison.244 at osu.edu
